How to Custom Design Shielded Power Inductors
Time: 2022-12-29 Source: Power Magnetic Components Wholesale Author: Terry Jin
In the previous article, we learned about shielded power inductors. If all inductor manufacturers want to design a high-quality and low-cost power inductor according to customer needs, they should be clear. According to the difference in magnetic shielding performance, inductors can be There are two different names of shielded inductors and unshielded inductors. There are patch inductors and I-shaped inductors in shielded inductors. The same is true for unshielded inductors.
So how do we quickly distinguish between shielded inductors and unshielded inductors? What are the differences between them? The following will describe three aspects. 1. Appearance distinction
The shielded inductor has a magnetic shielding structure on the outside, so the coil winding can be seen from the appearance must be an unshielded inductor, and the shielded inductor cannot see the coil winding from the appearance.
But there is one exception that needs to be noted: it is not necessarily a shielded inductor that cannot see the coil, it may also be an I-shaped inductor with a heat-extensible sleeve.
2. The structure of the magnetic circuit is distinguished
(1) The magnetic circuit structure of the shielded inductance is a closed magnetic circuit structure: the closed magnetic circuit structure is composed of magnetic materials, and the magnetic impedance is very small, which means that the magnetic core is a ring magnetic core, which is a closed magnetic circuit structure.
(2) The magnetic circuit structure of the unshielded inductance is an open magnetic circuit structure: because the magnetic circuit structure is exposed, it has a very obvious air gap, and its impedance is relatively large, which means that the magnetic core is U-shaped and EE-shaped.
3. Performance distinction
(1) Due to the different magnetic shielding structures of shielded inductors and unshielded inductors, under the same inductance and operating current, the volume of shielded inductors is larger than that of unshielded inductors.
(2) Unshielded inductors have the characteristics of high saturation rate, small volume and low impedance. Mainly focus on plug-in inductors, some chip inductors GCD series (soon to be replaced by shielded inductors), and rod inductors.
(3) Shielded inductors have the characteristics of high power, low resistance, and high current. It is mainly used in circuits with high requirements for EMC, involving signal transmission, intelligent computing, etc., such as mobile phones, computers, high-quality audio, etc.
