What is current sense transformer?
Current sensing transformers are designed to sense and measure current in isolated conductors or primary windings and generate proportional alternating current in the secondary windings. The frequency range is 2 Hz to 1 MHz and the current rating is 125 mA to 4000 A.

Performance specifications for current sense transformers include operating frequency range, direct current (DC) or root mean square (RMS) current rating, direct current resistance (DCR), isolation or high potential (hipot), operating temperature, and maximum size. Rated DC current is the level of continuous DC current that can pass through the transformer windings without damage. This current level is based on the maximum temperature rise at the maximum rated ambient temperature. The DC rating is related to the transformer's ability to minimize power losses in the windings through low DC resistance. For low-frequency currents, the rms current can be used instead of the rated DC current. Direct current resistance (DCR) is the resistance of a transformer winding measured with direct current. DCR is usually minimized in the design of the transformer and specified as the maximum rating. The isolation or withstand voltage level is the maximum voltage that can be applied to a current sensing transformer without damaging the transformer windings or dielectric.
Current sensing transformers are available in a variety of packaging methods. Surface Mount Technology (SMT) adds components to a printed circuit board (PCB) by soldering component leads or terminals to the top surface of the board. Through-hole technology (THT) mounts components on a printed circuit board (PCB) by inserting component leads into holes on the board and soldering the leads on the other side of the board. Transformers with connectors are connected to coaxial or other types of connectors. Waveguide assemblies consist of hollow metal conductors with rectangular, oval or circular cross-sections. Integrated circuit (IC) package types for current sensing transformers include flat pack (FPAK), single in-line (SIP), dual-in-line, and small outline integrated circuit (SOIC). In terms of packaging methods, current sensing transformers can be packaged in trays, tubes or tape and reel assemblies. Bulk products are distributed as individual parts.
